Mathematics & Computer Science at Manhattanville College
Mathematics
With a range of course offerings beginning with introductory mathematics, this department provides a strong undergraduate program. The department aims to prepare students to continue their education in graduate study; to fulfill the mathematics requirement and to provide the foundation for study in such related fields as chemistry, physics and computers; to give students the necessary background to enter certain areas of business and industry; and to acquaint students with the basic concepts of mathematics, an essential aspect of a liberal arts education. No course with a grade lower than C- will be accepted toward a major or minor in mathematics. In addition, a C average (calculated as the College calculates G.P.A.) must be maintained over all courses required for a major or a minor.
Computer Science
The computer science major is designed to give a student in this program a solid background in applied and theoretical computer science. Graduates of the program will have the skills necessary to enter the business world or pursue graduate study in computer science. The variety of computer offerings allows ample opportunity for non-majors to increase their computer skills. All undergraduates are encouraged to take as many computer courses as possible to complement their major programs. No course with a grade lower than C- will be accepted toward a major or a minor in computer science. In addition, a C average (calculated as the College calculates G.P.A.) must be maintained over all courses required for a major or minor

The purpose of the computer science programs of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is to contribute to the liberal education of the students by providing college level instruction in computer science, a relatively new but rapidly growing field of fundamental importance. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science instructs students who are pursing different courses of study and recognizes that the instruction must be adapted as much as possible to the needs of these students. For non-majors, the objective of the department is to train students in the skills of computer programming or in the use of the
The BSc Mathematics & Computer Science programme gives students a foundation in all branches of Mathematics, for example algebra, analysis, statistics, geometry, probability and mathematical methods. The Computer Science element is designed to provide an efficient and well-balanced introduction to the whole practical field, and therefore includes topics in programming and computer systems.
Misericordia University offers a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. The program is designed for students with strong interest in each of these fields. The Computer Science major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The program prepares students to pursue careers in scientific or industrial programming and systems analysis, or to continue their education at the graduate level. Students have ample access to computer labs stocked with IBM PC compatibles. All facets of the hardware and software are continually upgraded to ensure that students work with the most
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers college mathematics and computer science courses which provide all students with mathematical and computational skills. In addition, advanced courses support students who want to work in one of the mathematical sciences, to enter graduate school, or to teach. Mathematics is used in all areas of modern life and a major in mathematics prepares one for many different careers even those that do not yet exist.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers instruction leading to the following degrees:
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
Mathematics
Mathematics Education
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
Master
By completing the degree or certificate requirements, the student will apply program design principles and will acquire an understanding of data structures and their applications for an analysis and solution of numeric and non-numeric problems. The student will write programs using the C, C++, and assembly computer languages. All courses have a mandatory computer laboratory component requiring students to apply knowledge of the concepts from the lecture. Competencies are assessed regularly through examinations in the lecture component and through evaluation of computer laboratory activities.
Certificate of Completion
A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to the student who completes the following with
In mathematics we have majors that prepare you to go to graduate school, work in a math related field, or become a secondary teacher. Our students have had good success in graduate school and finding jobs as teachers. We have a solid program that will give you the foundation that you need in any of those three areas. Math is also a lot of fun!
The major in computer science has two options. One is a more technical degree while the other allows the student to integrate computer skills with another discipline. All our graduates in computer science have
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science includes the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, and statistics. The department offers majors and minors in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science. The curriculum is structured to meet the overlapping needs of students who fall in one or more of the following categories:
those who plan to become high school mathematics teachers;
those who plan to become actuaries;
those who intend to pursue graduate work in applied mathematics, computer science, or other related fields; and
those who will apply mathematics and/or computer science in the natural sciences, social sciences, business or other areas of quantitative studies.
