100 BASIC MATHEMATICS - 2 hours A review of topics in arithmetic and elementary algebra. Topics include: fractions, decimals, proportions and percent, signed numbers, linear equations and inequalities, and exponents. Fall. 101 MATH FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS I - 3 hours A course designed especially for the teacher of elementary school mathematics. Topics include: problem solving, sets, logic, functions, numeration systems, computational algorithms, rational and irrational numbers, and number theory. Prerequisite: placement. Fall. 102 MATH FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS II - 3 hours Topics include: proportional reasoning, percent, descriptive statistics, probability, intuitive geometry, transformational geometry and measurement. 240 MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS - 4 hours Basic concepts of probability; expectation; variance, covariance, distribution functions; bivariate, marginal and conditional distributions. College Preparatory Studies exists to remediate deficiencies, in order that students may excel in their chosen careers. The sequences of College Prep courses are designed to prepare students for college-level academic course work. The recommendation to enroll in College Prep courses is made on the basis of diagnostic testing and THEA. Although these courses do not satisfy any degree requirement, they are designed to assure reasonable student success in the college curriculum.

Transfer Program This program leads to careers in teaching, industry, government, actuarial work, or as support for many science disciplines. The mathematics background assumed for entry is four years of high school mathematics through pre-calculus and trigonometry. These entry-level courses, if needed, are also available through the college. Completion of the suggested coursework results in an associate degree and meets the general core requirements at all Idaho public universities. The suggested coursework normally fulfills the first half of baccalaureate degree requirements in mathematics. Course selection should be tailored to match requirements defined by intended transfer institutions.

Program Narrative The Math/Physics program prepares you for transfer to a four-year college or university by serving as the first two years of a baccalaureate program in the fields of mathematics, physics, or other physical sciences. Graduates of our two-year program have successfully transferred to and graduated from institutions such as Lafayette College, Kutztown University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Florida Institute of Technology, earning degrees in chemical or geological engineering, mathematics, and oceanography. You also may complete your associate degree and qualify for immediate employment as a laboratory aide or technician, a scientific assistant or in technical sales. D’Youville College offers a bachelor of arts degrees in mathematics. The curriculum offers a solid foundation in the discipline plus many electives, allowing you to pursue your own interests and career objectives. The major is designed to offer a broad exposure to the rich field of mathematics.
