Scholarships in Mathematics at Furman University

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

The Wylie Scholarship Program is a major program of financial aid for students with a strong interest and ability in mathematics. The endowment was established by C. Ray Wylie, a former professor of mathematics, and his wife, and has supported many excellent students.
Wylie scholarships are awarded primarily to entering freshmen who plan to major in mathematics. The scholarships are renewable each year, based on completion of specific academic requirements and on participation in Furman’s mathematics program. Application requirements include, among other items, letters of recommendation, an essay on the applicant’s interest in mathematics, and application for admission to Furman.
Other scholarships, such as the Blackwell and L.H. Bowen scholarships, are available for upper-level students. For more information on scholarships in mathematics, contact the department or the Office of Financial Aid at Furman.

There are many outside-of-class opportunities for development and growth. Through Furman Advantage or the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, you can conduct mathematical research under the guidance of faculty members either at Furman or at other institutions. Our department has experienced unusual success in placing students in the prestigious Budapest Semesters in Mathematics.
You will benefit from the chance to meet and interact with internationally known scholars through the Donald H. Clanton Visiting Mathematician Series. The program, established in memory of a former professor of mathematics, brings a prominent mathematician to campus each year for lectures and discussions with faculty and students.

Connect your course of study with a career.
Associate of Science degree requirements
Associate of Science electives list
It’s not complicated
Guaranteed Transfer means just that. It means a course is universally transferable among all Colorado public colleges and universities and applicable to general education requirements within the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degree programs.
FRCC has more than a hundred courses in 28 subject areas approved for guaranteed transfer.
It all adds up
If you complete an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, 60 credit hours of your degree (grades of C or better) are guaranteed to transfer to your four-year school, once you are admitted. And you should be able to finish a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree within another 60 credit hours. This is called a 60+60 transfer plan.
Be sure to see an advisor for a list of applicable degrees at your intended four-year school. 60 + 60 does not apply to Colorado School of Mines. Nor does it apply to Business, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Engineering, Nursing, and some pre-professional and science-related degrees. These majors fall under other statewide agreements that have specific course requirements that can be met at FRCC.
